The Sanctuary

At African Blessings we are truly passionate about taking care of animals in need. We feel that each and every animal deserves love, care and the right to be protected. Working closely with the Tshwane SPCA, we help to rehabilitate stray dogs, cats or livestock from poor and abusive conditions within the area. These neglected animals are brought to The Sanctuary at African Blessings. The Sanctuary is a place for all animals to feel loved and cared for so that we may heal their bodies and their spirits.

Community Critter Care

Twice a month the team goes into Rethabiseng and offers a mobile pet and animal care service to community member's animals. The community gathers and waits patiently for their turn for their dogs and cats to receive their checks. In severe cases where a pet requires medical attention, our team collects the pet and cares for it on the African Blessings Farm until the animal is once again healthy and can return to its family. Many of the pet owners we encounter love and want to care for their best friends, but do not have the means to do so; this is where the Community Critter Care team steps in to help.

Our skilful team provides basic medical treatment; dipping, de-worming, sterilisation and feeding animals. Educational programmes on how to care for domestic animals and assistance in the form of food, bowls and blankets are given.

Horses and Donkeys

The Equine Rescue Centre, established in 2010, is a principle and substantially important establishment within The Sanctuary at the African Blessings Farm. It was borne out of a need to provide rescued, abused, neglected, or otherwise-at-risk horses and donkeys with a place to recuperate and live out their lives in peace and surrounded by love, after a life of turmoil and abuse.

The original five horses: Amber, Jade, Jasper, Topaz and Kitty were all rescued from heart breaking situations. Some of them came from Onderstepoort Biological Products, after being used as test horses in the development of the African Horse Sickness (AHS) Vaccine. After a lengthy and hard-fought campaign, the discarded horses were rescued and brought to their new home at African Blessings. Our donkeys were rescued from similarly tragic circumstances and some from situations of horrific abuse and our Missions Director, Rita Edkins has a special place in her heart for her "Zonkeys", giving them each a special name starting with "Z": Zara, Zillah, Zelda, Zack, S(z)weetie, Zollie and Zerah. African Blessings has made sure that they, like the horses, are nurtured with love; and have a wonderful home where they can spend the rest of their lives and receive the care that they deserve.

So began the journey of building a relationship of trust and love with these, and the other equines, that have joined our herd along the way. Many of our horses and donkeys were abused, misused, fearful animals, but with much love, patience and kindness, these beautiful animals have allowed the African Blessings team into their hearts.

Other Domestic Animals

African Blessings is actively involved in the community, and responds to many pleas where any shape or form of animal is in dire need of help. Our Farm's family has grown to include many: pigs, chickens, and goats – all in need of care. Many of these animals still reside on the Farm, while others are re-homed to be offered a second chance at the life they deserve.
